The Pousada de Tavira, Convento da Graça, is a delightful Pousada (designated Historic) in the heart of the pleasant riverside town of Tavira in the Algarve. It is an intimate and appealing place to stay that successfully blends the classic lines of the original convent with rich modern touches. It is one of the prettiest Pousadas, with its ochre coloured walls, Renaissance cloister and beautiful courtyard with fountain and orange trees. It is skilfully lit at night making it evocative and romantic. The Baroque central staircase is very impressive, and the artwork and sculptures add considerable interest to this once austere convent. In a newer part of the convent are a garden with two swimming pools (one for children), and a massage/aesthetics room (book in advance). The restaurant and bar are elegant and the cuisine offered is mainly fish and seafood prepared in a regional style. There are twenty seven rooms, four superior rooms and five suites, all spacious and pleasantly decorated and with heating and air conditioning, cable television and lcd, minibar, hairdrier and robe, internet access (in the salon) and phone. Fourteen of the rooms have a balcony and some on the ground floor have their own tiny garden. The location is excellent: just a few steps from the Pousada is the castle wall and inner garden, a tranquil square, an interesting church and a pedestrian shopping area. Some of the Algarve's best golf courses are in the vicinity - Benamor, Monte Rei and Quinta da Ria. Because of its strategic location Tavira has been an historically important town. Throughout there are vestiges of ancient civilizations (in fact, if you visit the Pousada's bar, look at the Phoenician ruins that were uncovered during excavations and are displayed in their original state below the Pousada.) The town was an important Phoenician stronghold, and was also subsequently inhabited by the Moors and the Romans. Visit the local museum that is just a few steps from the Pousada to see the importance of tuna fishing to the town's history. See the Arab/Roman bridge, the salt-marshes and the Ria Formasa Natural Park. There is secure private parking at this Pousada. This was one of our favourite Pousadas to visit: it is a stunningly beautiful property and the town of Tavira has much to offer. The Tavira market and Antiques Fair are held on the third Saturday of each month
