This Historic Pousada is within the S. Filipe fortress that was built in the 17th century by King Philip II of Spain (Philip I of Portugal). From its terraces (the original battlements) it has lovely views over the River Sado estuary and the Troia peninsula to the Atlantic on the horizon - a wonderful place to watch the sunset. Setúbal is one of Portugal’s main ports and from the Pousada there are some pleasant walks within the historic centre and surroundings, such as river Sado beaches or the Arrábida montain range. There are dolphins in the river below and it is possible to take Dolphin cruises from the port. There are just sixteen rooms at this Pousada, all equipped with full bathroom, minibar, air conditioning and heating, television and phone The restaurant serves all sorts of fish and seafood dishes and other regional cuisine - an area renowned for its wines and cheese. The Pousada is approximately 45 km from Lisbon. Note that there is no elevator at this Pousada but the staff will be happy to take luggage to your room. The parking area for the Pousada (before a stone ramp leading to the old building) looks quite daunting and there is little signage indicating where you are. The ramp is quite rugged and not the easiest to manoeuvre if you have difficulty walking. Try to arrive during daylight hours at this Pousada.
