The Posada de Dona Maria I is categorised as a Historic designation, being the former palace used by the Royal Guard of the Court (known as the Portuguese Versailles). It is located opposite the 18th century Queluz National Palace in the building usually known as the clocktower. Surrounding the Palace are the gardens created in 1760 to celebrate the marriage of D. Pedro to his future Queen. Located just 17 km. south of Lisbon airport (just 5 km. from central Lisbon and within easy reach of Sintra and Cascais) it is an ideal first or last stop when travelling to/from Lisbon. The restaurant of this Pousada is the well-known Cozinha Velha (the former royal kitchens) serving classic Portuguese cuisine of the region. This Pousada has twenty four medium-sized rooms and two suites all with air conditioning, satellite television, radio, telephone, minibar, hairdryer and robes. The bathrooms are spacious and feature beautiful pink marble. The location of this Pousada is well located for visits to Sintra, a picturesque town with many castles, palaces and villas (including the famous Pena Palace), and Cascais on the coast of the wonderful Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe. This, and the neighbouring town of Estoril, are cosmopolitan with some splendid houses, gardens, shops and nightlife and is sometimes referred to as the Portuguese Riviera. While there is public transportation to Queluz, it is preferable to have a car, although there are convenient trains to Sintra and Cascais from this location.
