The Historic Pousada Dos Loios is located in the best possible location in the heart of Evora, next to the Roman Temple. The city has been designated a UNESCO world heritage site and a stay in this Pousada is truly living history. Originally the building was a convent and one of Evora’s most prized architectural buildings. In 1965 the convent was transformed to a very special Pousada and the former cells of the Conegos Regrantes (the nuns) were converted into comfortable, bright rooms complete with modern bathrooms. The rooms are built around a sunny manueline cloister and orange trees greet you from every viewpoint. There are thirty six well-equipped rooms of different styles, including standard double rooms, suites, special suites and superior rooms. The Presidential Suite in particular is worth your consideration -- it is certainly the largest and the most exotic room in the house, complete with special paintings and frescos. We found the suite very affordable in the off-season. This Pousada has an intimate and tranquil feel and we found the staff particularly helpful and friendly. They are experts on their Pousada and the lovely town of Evora and are always delighted to suggest some interesting itineraries. There is a bar and elegant restaurant serving regional Portuguese cuisine and, in the courtyard, a swimming pool. The Pousada has its own complimentary parking, which is a huge benefit in a town where most of the streets are pedestrian only and parking a nightmare. Note that there is no elevator at this historic Pousada, but the staff are happy to take your luggage to your room. Be sure to visit the Igreja dos Loios (attached to the Pousada), the cathedral and the museum of sacred art. The location is approximately 130 km. from Lisbon and in the heart of Alentejo.
