The house is named after the many chimneys where earlier generations of peasant families used to cook their meals. Monte da Fornalha nestles between the city of Estremoz and the village of Borba, famous for its wines. Just 50 km from Evora and minutes away from Serra D'ossa, one of the few ranges of hills in Alentejo, with a rich cultural heritage.This little inn was once the rural house of the local blacksmith, and has been restored and transformed into a beautiful guesthouse with modern comforts. The six bedrooms, all ensuite, have their own independent entrances from the gardens for added privacy. The pool is refreshingly spring-fed and is a perfect antidote to the intense Alentejan heat. Alentejo, known as the Provence of Portugal, is an ideal location for visiting famous sites and exploring undiscovered countryside. Horseriding, bicyling, golf, birdwatching and hiking are all in the vicinity. There are wine cellars to visit close by in Borba (where there is a wonderful celebration of wine in October). The owner Orlanda is charming and speaks excellent English. Please note that credit cards are not accepted for final payment here (only travellers cheques or cash).
