If you send an enquiry, we will always quote the best available rate. The Pousada de D. Afonso II at Alcacer Do Sal is one of the rare Pousadas designated as Historic Design - a special rating in the Pousada group thanks to its unique and pleasing combination of ancient history, sympathetic modern design and luxury. Situated in the thousand year-old Alcacer Castle overlooking the Sado River, it is a site that actually goes back five thousand years to the Neolithic period with important cultural ties to the Phoenicians, Arabs and Romans. The location is just 80 km. from Lisbon airport, making it an interesting place to spend a night or two before further exploring Alentejo - truly an environment of living history. The Pousada is full of wonderful carpets and artwork and it has an intimate appeal despite its grandeur. Many of the decorative pieces are original from the castle’s extensive past and a stroll through the castle and grounds is a fascinating experience. There are thirty five comfortable rooms, including two special suites, at this Pousada and all the rooms have minibar, air conditioning, cable television, phone, safe, internet access (in the bar area) and hairdryer. Several of the rooms have private balcony, and there is also a delightful swimming pool, restaurant and bar with large fireplace. The history of Alcacer do Sal is extensive, the castle being of crucial importance. The Romans called the location Salatia Urbs Imperatoria and it was one of the most important trade centres in the country. It is named after the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques and, in the sixteenth century when it was no longer of strategic importance, it become a Carmelite convent. Looking down from the Pousada, you can see areas below by the side of the Sado River where rice and pinenuts are grown and harvested. This was one of our favourite Pousadas to visit: a skilfull restoration of the original and a spectacularly fine incorporation of modern architectural features of stairways, bridges, walkways and outdoor pool make this an endlessly fascinating place to explore. A car is the best mode of transportation to this Pousada, but there are buses from Lisbon that stop at Alcacer.
